Eastern Florida State College developed the Core Scholar program in 2014 as the College's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), part of the SACSCOC Reaffirmation of Accreditation. The initiative was designed to equip our students with the combination of academic and soft skills necessary for success in college and eventually the workplace. The program included four components that any student could take advantage of: learning communities through career exploration courses, peer tutoring, soft skills workshops and success coaching/mentors.

All four components were institutionalized after the Spring 2019 term, with Peer Tutoring becoming an integral part of the EFSC Academic Success Centers (formerly known as the Learning Labs); career exploration courses and online learning communities continue as a standard part of the EFSC Schedule of Classes; Soft Skills Workshops covering study skills, time management, organizational skills and ettiquete in the workplace are taught by the EFSC Career Center staff each Fall and Spring term; and success coaching relationships continue throughout various areas of the College, including a mentor opportunity built into EFSC's Student Life Skills courses with an SLS prefix, designed to ease the transition to college life.

This web section includes the historical documentation of the Core Scholar program's development, implementation and institutionalization of the services in 2019.
